This legislation fights wildlife crime
In honor of 2019 World Biodiversity Day, Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR) reintroduced this powerful bipartisan legislation to end wildlife crime.
Sponsored by Representative Vern Buchanan (R-FL) in the House, H.R. 97: Rescuing Animals with Rewards Act of 2019 (RAWR Act) authorizes the Department of State and federal law enforcement to offer rewards from existing reward programs for information that targets international wildlife traffickers. In 2013, the State Department Rewards for Justice Program announced a reward of $1 million for information on one of the most notorious transnational criminal organizations engaged in wildlife trafficking. It worked. The RAWR Act further pushes the State Department to fight wildlife crime by using rewards to bring dangerous criminals to justice. But first, a majority of our legislators must vote “yes.”
