The Ethiopian wolf is the rarest and most endangered canine species in the world. Unfortunately, their close-knit communities have been devastated by disease outbreaks and driven high into the mountain ranges of Ethiopia by unsustainable farming practices.
With less than 500 of these unique, rust-colored wolves estimated to remain in Africa – and the world – it’s up to us to ensure their survival. Add your name to raise awareness about this species and support these AWF-led initiatives that are protecting them:
- Fighting disease outbreaks in partnership with Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Programme (EWCP) by administering rabies and distemper vaccines to wolves and domestic dogs in the area, which can transmit illness to wolves.
- Training local “Wolf Ambassadors” to monitor wolves, understand the causes of livestock predation by carnivores, and undertake vaccinations, promoting coexistence, also in partnership with EWCP.
- Investing in community-owned-and-operated tourism in the Simien Mountains, home to the second-largest population of Ethiopian wolves, as a sustainable alternative to subsistence farming.
- Fostering a conservation ethic among young people through a newly built Classroom Africa school for the Adisge community near Simien Mountains National Park.
